Γεννήθηκε στην Ερμούπολη της Σύρου.  Το 1957 εγκαταστάθηκε στην Αθήνα, όπου και σπούδασε (1958 - 1964) στο Α.Τ.Ι. σκηνογραφία και ενδυματολογία με δασκάλους το Σπύρο Βασιλείου, τον Τάσσο, τον Κώστα Πλακωτάρη, τον Αντώνη Πολυκανδριώτη κ.ά., ζωγραφική με το Γιάννη Τσαρούχη και σχέδιο με το Θανάση Απάρτη.  Από το 1963 έως το 1966 εργάσθηκε ως σκηνογράφος σε αθηναϊκά θέατρα.  Το 1971 εγκαταστάθηκε στην Τεχεράνη, όπου παρέμεινε μέχρι το 1978.  Την πρώτη του ατομική έκθεση παρουσίασε στην Αθήνα το 1969.  Ακολούθησε σειρά ατομικών εκθέσεων, καθώς και συμμετοχή του σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις, τόσο στην Ελλάδα, όσο και στο εξωτερικό.  Το έργο του εντάσσεται στο χώρο του υπέρμετρου ρεαλισμού.  Ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα.

Born at Hermoupolis on the Island of Syros, Michalis Makroulakis settled in Athens (1957) where he studied at the Athenian Technological Institute (1958 - 1964) stage scenery and costume design with Spiros Vassiliou, Tassos, Costas Plakotaris, Antonis Polykandriotis a.o., painting with Yannis Tsarouchis and design with Thanassis Apartis.  From 1963 to 1966 he worked as stage scenery designer in several theatres in Athens.  In 1971 he settled in Teheran (Iran), where he stayed until 1978.  He had his first one-man exhibition in Athens (1969).  Other solo and group shows followed in Greece and abroad.  His work belongs to the area of hyperrealism.  He lives and works in Athens.
